BodyTalk therapy, also known as the BodyTalk System, is a revolutionary treatment protocol that brilliantly blends key elements of state-of-the-art science, advanced yoga, Chinese medicine, Western medicine, applied kinesiology, and ancient Hindu philosophy.  The result is a simple yet highly effective and non-invasive holistic approach to healing that has been growing in popularity all over the world.

There are three key principles of BodyTalk therapy:

The underlying premise of BodyTalk is that the body is incredibly wise.  When functioning properly it has the capacity to effectively heal itself.  However, the constant stressors of life – such as pollution, the plethora of toxins in our environment and food, the frenetic pace of society, and emotional and physical trauma – can take a tremendous toll on our physical, psychological, and spiritual health and wellbeing.  The impact of these stressors causes a breakdown in functioning and communication within the body, which compromises its natural ability to heal itself.  This breakdown can manifest in a multitude of ways – including emotional, mental, and physical symptoms.

BodyTalk therapy works by gently, safely, and effectively restoring the body’s innate ability to heal itself. The goal of treatment is to bring every aspect of the body back into balance by re-aligning the communication between the body’s cells and systems.  Once everything is back in sync, healing is facilitated and the body can begin to function optimally once again.

BodyTalk has been found to be very effective in addressing an impressive range of symptoms, disorders, diseases, and problems.  Not only is it an effective treatment in terms of reducing and alleviating symptoms, it also works very well as a form of maintenance and prevention.  It can be used on its own or readily integrated with other forms of treatment.

A Brief History
BodyTalk System was developed in the mid-1990s by Australian healthcare practitioner Dr. John Veltheim. In addition to his training in both chiropractic and Chinese medicine, Dr. Veltheim had also studied Reiki, bioenergetics, sports medicine, philosophy, and applied kinesiology.  Plagued with perplexing chronic health issues of his own, he drew upon his knowledge in each of these areas to create the treatment protocol that came to be known as BodyTalk.

BodyTalk Techniques
When you attend a BodyTalk session with your practitioner, he or she will use a variety of techniques in order to improve your body’s internal communication system.  These include:

Breathwork – Breathwork is commonly used in yoga.  It involves consciously controlling your breathing in order to fully engage your mind, body and emotions in the therapeutic process. The use of breathwork helps ensure positive and lasting treatment effects.

Tapping – Tapping specific acupressure trigger points, particularly on your head and face, is another BodyTalk technique.  When certain points are stimulated in this way, it enables your body to focus on the areas that need healing.

Cortices Technique – This BodyTalk technique is used to bring the left and right sides of your brain back into balance.  It essentially “resets” your brain when it’s suffering from overload.  When your right and left brain hemispheres are balanced, they’re able to communicate efficiently.  This, in turn, greatly enhances your body’s ability to heal itself.  The Cortices Technique is one of the most important in the BodyTalk protocol. Benefits of this technique – such as a sense of relaxation and the ability to think more clearly – are often experienced right away.  

Body Chemistry – This unique technique works by stimulating the body’s immune system so it can effectively deal with problems caused by things such as bacteria, viruses, and parasites.  These unwanted intruders are often at the root of numerous acute and chronic health issues.  The Body Chemistry technique bypasses the need for medication – which is the typical treatment – by effectively addressing the imbalances they cause in the body.  Because this technique enhances immune functioning, it also helps to alleviate allergies, problems caused by the buildup of toxins in the body, and food sensitivities and intolerances

Hydration – Your body’s tissue is comprised of over 70% water.  This is why proper hydration is crucial to your overall health and functioning.  The hydration technique helps restore your body’s ability to properly utilize the water in your system.  When this occurs, every process in your body will reap the benefits.    

Reciprocals – When the integrity of your body’s structure is compromised, it can have a serious impact on your mobility, circulation, coordination, and ability to avoid injury as well as heal properly from them.  It often results in pain issues.  The Reciprocals technique is designed to restore this integrity. 

Switching – Stress often causes the brain to become “switched”, manifesting in symptoms such as concentration problems, moodiness, confusion, and impaired coordination.  When your brain is switched you may also confuse very basic things like left and right.  This technique enables your brain to function normally again.  

What to Expect
BodyTalk sessions are designed to make you feel safe, relaxed, and comfortable.  Your session will typically start with the practitioner asking about your health, and discussing any specific problems or concerns that you want to address in treatment.  BodyTalk sessions typically last anywhere around 45 minutes.

BodyTalk for Unresolved Trauma and PTSD
Although BodyTalk therapy is frequently used for the treatment of a wide range of physical disorders, such as arthritis, chronic pain, allergies, and infections, it can also be a very effective form of treatment for individuals suffering from unresolved trauma and PTSD.  The impact of psychological trauma can be devastating.  If left untreated, or if treatment fails or provides limited relief, the trauma remains stored in the body both physically and emotionally.

Essentially, you remain in survival mode; vulnerable to situations, emotions, and memories that keep triggering the unresolved trauma.  It will continue to wreak havoc in different ways, some of which may be subtle (e.g. chronic muscle tension or a general feeling of dread) while others may be obvious (e.g. flashbacks or nightmares related to the trauma).  That’s why it’s so important to receive effective treatment as soon as possible following a traumatic event.
